This sculpture belongs to the large centrepiece "Birth of Beauty" which was created by
Paul Scheurich at the end of his life for the Berlin Porcelain Manufactory. The then Reich
Foreign Minister Joachim von Ribbentrop had commissioned it from the manufactory in 1940.
"Scheurich chose the theme "The Birth of Beauty"; whose centrepiece was to be the group of
Venus Anadyomene. Only a part of this work; consisting of nereids; tritons; putti riding
on dolphins and other sea creatures; was executed. Scheurich's style has changed in this
last work. His figures no longer have the carefree grace of rococo; but rather show the
super-slender; tense attitude of mannerism; marked by strong contrapost." (from: K鰈lmann
(1966) p.154).
