"Il destrier punto; ponta i pi?all'arena
e sbalza in aria e per lo ciel galloppa;
e porta il cavalliero in su la schena;
e la donzella dietro in su la groppa.
Cos?priv?la fera de la cena
per lei soave e delicata troppa.
Ruggier si va volgendo; e mille baci
figge nel petto e negli occhi vivaci."
(Ludovico Ariost; Orlando Furioso; Canto X; Stanza 112).

Barye captured in his famous bronze the moment of Angelica's salvation from the sea
monster Orca. Until a few moments ago she was tied to a rock as a victim; but now she lies
in the arms of the knight Ruggiero; who immediately falls in love with her.
The large group is part of a centrepiece commissioned from Barye by Antoine d'Orl閍ns; duc
de Montpensier (1824-1890). This was probably intended to compete with the centrepiece "La
chasse au tigre"; which Barye created for his older brother; Ferdinand Philippe d'Orl閍ns
and had caused a sensation.Art trade; Van Ham.
