GILDED SILVER CUP AND SAUCER FROM THE EMPIRE PERIOD WITH NIELLO DECOR.
Berlin. 1819-1842.
Silver plated; Niello decor. Cup with small round foot and ovoid body. Below the lip margin broad; drawn-in stripe with fine relief frieze. Lions between leaf ornaments. The rest of the wall decorated with a strict stripe pattern. The saucer also with reliefed margin and stylised leaf ornament in niello technique on the wide flag. Ca. 278g. Height of cup 11.5cm / 15.5cm.
Inspection mark Berlin 1. Assayer's mark 1819-1854 (Scheffler Berlin no.14); 2. Assayer's mark 1819-1842 (ib. no.18). Maker's mark 'Wagners et S Berlin' possibly for Johann Wagner and Son (from 1824 court jewellery masters; ib. cf. 1819a). On cup '8 7/8 L' and on saucer '10 1/2 L' engraved. Condition C.Art trade; Van Ham.
