THREE ALBUMS OF A SHIP TRAVEL; LANDSCAPES AND PERSONS.
Origin: China.
Date: Ca. 1900. One album dated 1901.
Technique: Three Japanese albums with lacquer covers; partly with inlay.
Description: a) Large slip-in album (ca.27x35cm): 45 family photos and portraits of Emperor Willhelm II and August Grethe; friends and comrades; the training ship 'Nixe' and August Grethe as cadet from a photo studio in New York.
b) Leporello album (ca.14x18.5cm) with 46 photos: Departure from Bremerhaven 1901; captain and crew at exercises and distractions; stations of the travel; different ships (SMS F黵st Bismark; SMS Geyer; mail steamer Sachsen); photos of Tsingtau and group pictures with Chinese men and women.
c) Leporello album (ca.14x18.5cm) with 48 Japanese photos; colored by hand.
Condition B. At the smaller albums each one cover missing; pages torn.
Provenance:
-Collection August Grethe (1884-unknown). Grethe came to the Navy in 1906 and became ensign in 1912 and later chief petty officer.
-Private collection through inheritance; Northern Germany.
