IMPORTANT AND FINE DEPICTION OF THE PRAJNAPARAMITA.
Origin: Khmer.
Dynasty: Angkor period (800-1431).
Date: 10th c.
Technique: Bronze with green patina with lapis-lazuli blue spots.
Description: The graceful figure wears royal jewelry and clothing; according to her position. In her
left she holds a lotus stalk; in her right a kundika bottle; an attribute she shares with
Avalokiteshvara and the Buddha Maitreya. Prajnaparamita is regarded as the Goddess of
Wisdom; as the Mother of all Buddha and as the consort of Lokeshvara. As a figure she may
have once belonged to a Buddhist altarpiece depicting the enthroned Buddha flanked by
Lokeshvara. The design and the casting are of high quality and reflect the features that
characterized the Buddhist art of the Khmer in the 10th c.
