The nave of Saint Peter's Basilica. (Nef de la basilique Saint-Pierre)It is 45 m. high (137 beneath the dome) 27 m. wide (140 m. in the transept) and 187 m. long. It is bordered by three couples of massive pilasters; with Corinthian pilaster strips. Above the pilasters are six arches (three on each side) which support the long trabeation under the barrel vault enhanced with late 18th-century coffers during the pontificate of Pope Pius VI.- Below: -The twisted columns of the Baldachin by Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1598-1680) Bernini's first work at St. Peter's was to design the baldacchino; a pavilion-like structure 28.74 metres tall and claimed to be the largest piece of bronze in the world; which stands beneath the dome and above the altar.(St Peter's basilica; basilique Saint-Pierre; Petersdom)Vatican; 2019.
