The nave of Saint Peter's Basilica. (Nef de la basilique Saint-Pierre)The ceiling is gilded stucco; and the arms are pope Pius VI's.The nave is 45 m. high (137 beneath the dome) 27 m. wide (140 m. in the transept) and 187 m. long. It is bordered by three couples of massive pilasters; with Corinthian pilaster strips. Above the pilasters are six arches (three on each side) which support the long trabeation under the barrel vault enhanced with late 18th-century coffers during the pontificate of Pope Pius VI.- Below: -The twisted columns of the Baldachin by Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1598-1680) Bernini's first work at St. Peter's was to design the baldacchino; a pavilion-like structure 28.74 metres tall and claimed to be the largest piece of bronze in the world; which stands beneath the dome and above the altar.(St Peter's basilica; basilique Saint-Pierre; Petersdom)Vatican; 2020.
