Charles Th茅odore Fr猫re; Street in Cairo; n.d.; oil on panel; 13 11/16 in. x 10 3/8 in. (34.77 cm x 26.3 cm); Napoleon Bonaparte's 1798 military expedition in Egypt prompted widespread interest throughout Europe in the history and culture of Egypt; then a province of the Ottoman Empire. A half-century later; his fellow countryman Charles-Th茅odore Fr猫re first visited Egypt and became enamored of the region. Having studied at the 脡cole des Beaux-Arts in Paris; Fr猫re established a studio in Cairo in 1853. Painting scenes of famous buildings鈥攁s well as daily life鈥攈e won acclaim both in France and in Egypt. In Cairo; local authorities awarded him the title 'bey'鈥攐r lord鈥攊n recognition of his artistic achievements. Street in Cairo epitomizes the interest in Orientalist themes then popular in Europe and America.
