Augustin Dupre; John Paul Jones (Comitas Americana Series) (1747-1792); 1783; nineteenth century restrike; bronze; 2 1/4 in. (5.7 cm); Remembered as the Father of the US Navy; John Paul Jones served as a Captain and Commodore of the Continental Navy during the Revolutionary War. Part of the congressionally commissioned Comitas Americana series of medals commemorating significant victories of the Revolutionary War; this medal celebrates Jones's signature victory over the HMS Serapis off the coast of Scotland in 1779. More significantly; this was the first naval medal ever authorized by Congress and the only naval representation in the Comitia Americana series. This specimen is a US Mint restrike of the medal; issued during the 1860s and identified by the erasure of French medalist Augustin Dupre's signature on the bust.
