Matteo di Andrea de'Pasti; Sigismondo Pandolfo Malatesta (1417-1468); 1446; bronze; 3 3/16 in. (8.1 cm.); Following the destruction of the original castle at Rimini caused by the development of fifteenth century lightweight cannons; Lord of Rimini Sigismondo Pandolfo Malatesta sought to rebuild the structure; as seen on the reverse. In comparison to other specimens of similar obverse and reverse imagery; this medal incorporates higher concentrations of zinc and lead; which form a high-zinc brass. The lead in this medal caused a natural patina; verdigris; to be quite prominent on the surface. The surface quality of the medal helps confirm the fifteenth-century dating and makes it conceivable that this specimen might have been used as a foundation medal during the construction of the castle in Rimini.
