"You'd be amazed at the number of people who merely need more confidence in themselves to become mentally healthy," says Alexander. The author of this article, Edward Alexander, took up the study of hands when a doctor friend suggested it might help to take his mind off his difficulties in adjusting to civil life after World War II (he had been a pilot in the Fleet Air Arm). The hobby so fascinated Alexander that eventually it became his work. As a private consultant as well as assisting firms seeking vocational guidance for employees he has since examined thousands of hands. The six sample hand-readings given on die following pages are of hands extended to Alexander through a trapdoor in "People" office, the subjects in each case, being invisible and unknown to Alexander. Observers agree that his analysis of the personalities of his hidden subjects is astonishingly accurate, and many of the subjects themselves say that he has uncovered their hidden worries and aspirations.
