Cities of the World - Lisbon: This is a view of the expansive Tagus River from atop the ancient Fortress of St. George, with its copper cannons dating back to the 15th Century. Facing the river (at left) is Lisbon's Praza de Commerzio (Commercial Square). The Portuguese capital extends for about five miles along the Tagus, which brings in the ships from the Atlantic (nine miles away) and makes Lisbon one of the world's busiest ports. A city of contrasts, Lisbon boasts broad drives, fine squares, handsome bright-colored houses, modern transportation and other facilities, and excellent land scaping everywhere. April 22, 1955.
