The fishing chief of the Ile Ouen (New Caledonia) tribe, who was in charge of demonstrations of native reef-fishing methods arranged for delegates to the Fisheries Conference. An important objective of the South Pacific Commission in its task of promoting the welfare of Pacific island peoples is the stepping up of food production in the region. Ways and means of developing fisheries in the area were studied by delegates to a six-nation fisheries Conference held at Commission headquarters last May. February 22, 1954.
