MYTHOLOGY Allegorical representation of the goddess Juno; seated in a throne of clouds with a scepter; crown and peacock; an animal sacred to her. At the base of the oval is depicted the episode that explains the origin of the bird's magnificent tail: Mercury; commissioned by Jupiter; beheads the giant Argo with a hundred eyes to free the girl Io; transformed into a heifer and placed by Juno under the his custody. According to the myth the goddess; to remember and honor the faithful giant; took all her eyes and put them on the peacock's tail. Calcography of the Dutch painter and engraver Hendrick Goltzius (1558 - 1 January 1617); Netherlands 1596
