Marie-Jeanne ROLAND de la Plati鑢e (17 March 1754 - 8 November 1793); viscountess wife; born Manon Philipon in a family of the petty bourgeoisie of Paris; wife and counselor of Jean-Marie Roland viscount de la Plati鑢e (1734-1793); inspector of manufactures and economist under Louis XVI; then Minister of the Interior of the Girondin government. A passionate student since she was a child; reading Plutarch confirms the conviction that the State must work for the well-being of all its citizens; not only of its monarch; so at the time it passionately embraces and promotes revolutionary motions; while disapproving and detesting the violent ways. Cultural animator of the Girondist salons (which due to its unquestioned influence are sometimes identified as "Rolandists"); after their fall was arrested and sentenced to death: led to the guillotine; passing in front of the statue of Liberty would have pronounced the famous phrase : "O Freedom; how many crimes are committed in your name!" Engraving by Charles-Etienne Gaucher (1740-1804); France 18th century
