WEST; BENJAMIN
1738 Springfield (Pennsylvania) - 1820 London - School

Portrait of a Republican against his Library. Oil on canvas. Relined. 111 x 87;5cm. Framed.

The books in the background of the painting are volumes of Rushworth's Historical Collections; presumably the 1721 edition. A clear hint at the republican views of the portrayed. John Rushworth's writings effected above all American society and influenced the independence movement. The painting was probably created shortly before or during the American War of Independence.
Art trade; Van Ham.
