In his letter dated August 13; 1993 Dr. Duncan Thomson; Scottish National Portrait Gallery; Edinburgh; confirms the painting's attribution to Raeburn: "... This is
certainly a work by the Scottish painter Sir Henry Raeburn (1756-1823) and in my view a
very good one. ... Our records; however; do rever to a portrait by Raeburn of someone
called Edward Fraser (1751-1835); which was sold at Christie's on 10 July 1897. It is
described in our records ... as: 'Head slightly to the left; dark blue coat with brass
buttons'". The so-called "Highland Scotts" played a historically interesting role in settling the colonies. The sons of the portrayed for instance emigrated to Berbice (Guayana).Art trade; Van Ham.
