Anton Melbye was enrolled at the Danish art academy; but very early he became a private pupil of Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg; whose romantic-classical style he mirrors in his early work. As early as 1843 he competed with Carl Dahl for 'De Neuhausenske Praemier'; a competition of the Copenhagen academy.
