MELBYE; FRITZ SIGFRIED GEORG
1826 Helsing鴕 - 1896 Shanghai

In the Harbour of Havana. Oil on canvas. Relined. 39 x 53;5cm. Remains of a signature lower right. Framed.

Verso:
- old titling in Danish "Inseilingen til Havnen ved Havanna".

The harbour of Havana is known to us from a similar view of the here depicted engraving. Fritz Melbye learned from his brother Anton Melbye (lot 504). As early as 1849 he sailed towards the Caribbean. On one of his adventure trips he met the French Camille Pissarro who became his student.
After a stay in New York (1861-63) he attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Pennsylvania. From there he again set off to Newfoundland; Gibraltar; Cuba and Santo Domingo. Thus the painting must have emerged in the 1860s.
