IMPORTANT LUOHAN BED (LUOHANCHUANG) FROM ZITAN AND HUANGHUALI WOOD.
China. Qing period. 18th/ 19th century.

Frame; side parts and drop in seat from palisander (chin. huanghugali; Dalbergia spp.); decorative panel and moulding from red sandalwood (chin. zitan; Pterocarpus santalinus). This narrow form was usually used as a sofa equipped with pillows and padding; but also as a bed and daybed. The peaches; pomegranates; peonies; lotus and ruyi sceptres carved into the panels are symbols of wealth; fertility and a long life. Height 62 cm; width 189;5 cm; depth 61 cm. Condition A/B.
