Soapstone (shoushan stone); green with red parts; very finely carved with meticulous details. An idealised landscape in Southern China with high; heavily rugged and wooded mountains. Around a large pine tree in the centre the houses of a village are grouped. Above the gate of the assembly hall there is a five-pointed star; which dates the piece. Next to another building a pump for the irrigation of the elevated rice field where a farmer ploughs with a ox-drawn cart. Width 49 cm. Condition A. Enclosed: mounted on a matching; pierced base from brown; brightly spotted soapstone.Art trade; Van Ham.
