Indonesia; North-Sumatra. First half of 20th century.

A) Ulos sibolang; ceremonial shoulder scarf in blue with arrow-pattern in warp ikat in indigo. Cotton with original finish. Each side with a pre woven stripe in tablet weaving for holding the warp. Fine warp fringes and stamps at each side. This type of cloth was used for widows in times of mourning. 214 x 112cm. B) Ulos sadum; cermonial cloth with colorful brocaded patterns and woven in small white beads on a black and purple ground. A wider and thicker bands of brocaded patterns at each side. This type of cloth was used in marriage rituals. Length 180cm; woven width 67.5 cm. Condition A/B.
