THANGKA. BUDDHA SHAKYAMUNI.
Tibet. Ca. 17th century.
Colours and gold on canvas; silk fabric as mounting. In the centre the historic Buddha Shakyamuni with bhumisparsa mudra; flanked by his two favourite disciples Shariputra and Maudgalyayana. The group is surrounded by the 35 confession Buddhas and further figures. From the Buddha's throne; decorated with white lions on the left and white elephants on the right; there is a cloth hanging with the motif of a blue dragon. To the bottom left sits a group of benefactors whose clothes suggest that they are from a different region and Lamas who are performing the blessing. To the right the four guards of the cardinal directions. On the back there are as a blessing the handprints of the Lama who inaugurated the Thangka. Size: 104 x 74.5cm.
