SARUNG PRADA; BATIK WITH APPLIED GOLD.
Indonesia; north coast Java. 19th/early 20th century.
Cotton fabric with natural dyes (red and green) and gold leaf. With clear Western influence in the larger part (badan) twigs with peacocks; in the papan borders stags and large insects; as well as in the triangles of the tumpal area. The strong nuances of the dark red and green as well as the great precision; the rich filler motifs and the birds are characteristic for the style of Carolina von Franquemont (1817-67). Whether this is a work from her hand or a batic from her surrounding or the successors is difficult to determine. 107.5 x 204cm. Condition B.
