NETSUKE. RAT ON LEAVES. HIPPOPOTAMUS TOOTH.
Mid 19th century.
The cowering rat; grabbing its tail with its left hand; sitting on a used holy rope (shimenawa) with leaves of shinobu fern and sasaki. Eyes inlaid in black horn. The delicate details are coloured. The piece shows obvious traces of wear. Width 4;6cm. Condition B/C. Imperfection and chipping.
