HUMMEL; CARL MARIA NICOLAUS
Weimar 1821 - 1907

Italian Landscape. Oil on canvas. 70 x 87;5 cm. Signed lower left: C. Hummel.

Carl Hummel was a student of Friedrich Preller at the Royal Free Drawing School in Weimar until 1841. He went on various study trips; amongst others to Tyrol and Italy. Later he returned to Weimar and became professor at the Grand Duke Saxon Art School.
His paintings usually depict motifs from the Italian and Tyrol Alps. The present Italian landscape is a great example for Carl Hummel's ability to express a poetic feeling for nature of dignity and vastness in a painting.Art trade; Van Ham.
