Alreday before 1880 numerous American and Russian collectors acquired watercolours and paintings by L閛n L'Hermitte. His works were enthusiastically celebrated at exhibitions "around the globe". In 1882 the Mus閑 de Luxembourg; Paris; bought his large painting "La
Paye de Moissonneurs". The scene ermerged in the village Wissant; which is located on the English Channel; and shows a farmers couple seated in fornt of their homested; watching their passing cattle. With his rural scenes that depict working or resting people in their daily life L'Hermitte stands in immediate succession to Millets. Already in the early 1880s art critics stated that "Millet's cloak could not have fallen on more deserving shoulders." His best pieces are among the main works of French naturalism.
