China; Kanton. Qing dynasty. 19th c.

Minutely engraved ivory; frame and base from openwork wood. The ivory plaque shows Luohan Angaja resting on a leaf seat and holding his gnarly; curved stick with tied scroll. On the upper left a finely engraved text. On the back Chinese text as well. The ivory plaque cased in dark wood frame from carved; plant-themed ornaments; medallions and zoomorphic ornaments sporadically in-between. The same ornaments can be found in the mounting that encloses the wood frame with two dragon heads and stands on four feet ending in volutes. Plaque 12;4 x 8;7cm; all-together 28;4 x 21 cm.

Inscription: Aphorism about the Amitayurdhyana Sutra; about the fourth observation; Trees in the Pure Land. On the back four poems.
