THANGKA OF MACIG LABDR諲.
Tibet. 17th/18th c.

Colors and gold on fabric; mounting with Chinese silks. The thangka is painted in the Eastern Tibetan tradition. Macig Labdr鰊 clad as and with jewels like a Bodhsiattva in dancing position on a lotus in front of the moon disk. The top row with three lama with scholars hats; each with an inscription underneath. In the center the Master of Macig Labdr鰊 Padampa Sangyue with the inscription: bjang mchog kyi rje - the superb master). The inscription under the right figure reads: dus gsum rgyal ba ??u `dus dpal - gangs can mgon gcig gsum chen po and under the left one: skal bzang sangs rgyas phyogs mtshan - spyan legs zhes bya blo zangs grags. At the lower end again Padampa Sangyue is shown celebrating a chod ritual at a desk with a blood filled kapala. Other scenes showing him at a cemetery with vultures and two students with yogi bands. 98 x 57;5cm; picture size 51 x 31;5cm. Condition B.
