DUPERREUX; ALEXANDRE LOUIS R. MILLIN
Paris 1764 - 1843

View of the Hot Springs Cauterets in the Pyrenees. Oil on canvas. 95 x 130;5cm. Signed lower right: DuPerreux. Framed.

Being a chronographer of historic sites in France the Paris-born Alexandre
Millin Duperreux had built up a reputation in the early 19th century. He often integrated matching scenes from the historic context into his motifs. This was so much to liking of contemporary society that even Empress Josephine acquires one of his works.
Duperreux does not prefer the Italian subject which is quite unusual for landscape depictions from this period. As shown in the representative large work on canvas the painter is rather attracted by the French Pyrenees. In the present work he portrayed the spa town Cauterets of which the hot springs were already known in antiquity. However; the 19th century was the time of this town. Another; significantly smaller view of this town; dated 1810; can be found in the museum in Bristol.
