The group of artists of the Peredwischniki (in English: hiker) was a cooperative association that initiated numerous circulating exhibitions; particularly in the Russian cities Moscow; Kiev Charkow; Kasan; Orjol; Riga; and Odessa; from 1871 until 1923. Their intention was a realistic and critical representation of the urban and rural life of the Russian population. It united the most talented painters of the country such as Repin; Schischkin; Lewitan; Perow; Polenow; Makowski; and many others. The period of prosperity of this humanistic; artistic movement was in the 1870s and 1880s. According to his artistic intention our monogrammist (GW) is also certainly to be found in this period.
