Illustration showing a cross-section of the Peral submarine, the world's first electric submarine. It was designed by the Spanish engineer Isaac Peral (1851-1895) for the Spanish Navy. It was built at the Carraca shipyard, Cadiz, Spain, from October 1887, and launched on 8 September 1888. The submarine was 22 metres long, had electric motors, two propellers, and a torpedo tube. Tests were successful, but the project was shelved in 1890.
