From the certificate by Dr. Miachaela Schedl:
"[...] The slightly later woodcut by Hans Wechtlin; active in Strasbourg; could be a lead to the panel havin been created in the Upper Rhine region. Here John is also portrayed lying down in the right corner of the image; which to my knowledge is rather unusual regarding variations of the three sleeping males. Moreover; a panel by the Strasbourg Master of the Drapery Studies - also known as Master of the Coburg Roundels - can be pointed out; it might suggest that the privately owned panel was created in the Upper Rhine region; possibly Strasbourg. It entered the collection of Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe (State Art Gallery). In each of these cases John is depicted as wearing red garments with a white overcoat. These panels certainly differ in style. Still both painters rendered their figures with kind; gentle faces and similar hairstyles each.
The panel in private ownership might thus likewise have been made in the Upper Rhine region; possibly in Strasbourg; though slightly earlier than the panel in Karlsruhe; accordingly dating it to around 1470/80. [...]"
