BEUCKELAER; JOACHIM
Antwerp ca. 1533 - ca. 1574
Circle

Market scenery with the Passion of Christ. Second half of the 16th century. Oil on wood. Parqueted. 121 x 173;5cm. Framed.

Joachim Beuckelaer learned the craft of painting from his uncle Pieter Aertsen (1509-1575 Antwerp) and became a member of the Antwerp guild of Saint Luke in 1560. The RDK database in The Hague lists two versions of the composition at hand 'Market scenery with the Passion of Christ':
- Pushkin Museum; Moscow; measunring 120 x 174;5 cm; dated 1561 and as personally J. Beuckelaer;
- Rijksmuseum Amsterdam; measuring 126;5 x 182 cm; as 'after Beuckelaer'; presumably 1550-1590.

Alongside the version from a private collection in Bonn presented here; there are hardly any differences among the three of them; even when it comes to details - except for the lower part of our image; where a basket of (neatly arranged) carrots has been added.
