We thank Dr. Kurt Andreas; J. P. Schneider jr. Gallery; Frankfurt am Main; for his kind support.
Owing to his exotic motifs Adolf Schreyer has had a lastig effect on European painting; celebrated by the critics of his time for his talent of rendering a dramatic narrative style in realistic representation.
He is especially admired for his accomplished way of directly affecting the viewer by the atmosphere generated in his paintings; whether it is the blazing desert sun or a freezing winterscape. By some he is today even regarded as percursor of German Ismpressionism.
In 1828 Adolf Schreyer was born in Frankfurt am Main as son to a respected family; providing him with the privilege of a good education and a life of frequent travel. His thirst for knowledge of exotic topics led him to Russia; Asia Minor; and North Africa. He was fascinated by the people and their indigenous way of life; especially by the coexistence of Arabian horses and their riders. Schreyer took the portrayal of horses to extraordinary levels; attracting international attention; especially in France and the USA.
