A couple of peacocks standing on a rock; next to light pink and white blossoming peonies.
The decorative painting of the Kan?school was popular in the Edo period. Peacocks are in Japan not native; but were an exotic import. They are a symbol for compassionate watchfulness and are associated with the Bodhisattva Kannon. Two-fold screen with silk mounting and surrounding wooden slat. Condition B/C. Traces of use; restored.Art trade; Van Ham.
