NETSUKE: MIGHTY COILED RAT.
Japan. Edo Period. 1890-1946.
Boxwood; finely and expressively carved with dark patination. The rat with large ears holding a wavy tail around its body with two strong front paws. The fur very well engraved; the big eyes inlaid with black horn; forming quite a contrast. W.4cm. Signed on a polished oval reserve Masanao. This is the last great master of the Ise-family in Yamada; Miyake Kisabur? 1890-1946; see Ducros: Netsuke & Sagemono; pg. 204. Condition A.
