Japan. Edo Period. Late 18th century / Early 19th century.
Ivory; finely carved and engraved; the pupils inlayed with dark horn. The originality in composition and facial expression mentioned by Meinertzhagen; is very clearly confirmed by this piece. Furthermore it is very similar to a model of the artist; depicted in MCI on p. 568. H.3;5cm. Sign.: Mitsuhide (strongly rubbed off) on oval reserve. Condition A.
