NETSUKE: LYING BOAR WITH RAISED HEAD.
Japan. Edo Period. Middle 19th century.
Ivory; finely carved; engraved and polished; the eyes inlayed with light horn and dark pupils. The still young animal is scintillating with its head held high between thin grasses and is raising its left frontleg. The carver; who worked in Ky魌o and came from Izumo; belongs to the few Netsuke-artists; who received the title H鬵en; that appears on his later works. L.4;8cm. Sign.: Rantei on long; oval reserve in Sosh?& on rectangular reverse the title H鬵en. Condition A/B.
