NETSUKE: MUSCULAR ONI.
Japan. Edo period. Early 19th century.
Boxwood; predominantly dark patinated; partly rubbed off due to wearing. Oni dressed in nothing but a tiger skin apron is lying coiled; his head with only one eye visible hidden behind his legs; while his hands try to fight off the beans on his back. The natural Himotoshi suggests a dating circa early 19th century. H.3.6cm. Signed: Masakazu on elliptical cartouche; cf. MCI p. 426 a similar signature depicted on the bottom right. Condition A. Minimal; flattened spot on one toe.
