NETSUKE: TURTLE.
Japan. Edo period. 19th century.

Sperm whale tooth; delicately carved and engraved; partly reddish-brown accentuates; the animal's eyes inlaid gold. Turtle crawling over a large; rotten lotus leaf with fruit and buds - on one of which a beetle sits. W.4cm. Condition A.
