Japan. Edo period. Mid-19th century.
Open walnut; the nutshell carved very naturalistically from chestnut wood; the nut likewise; however from ivory. Roughly naturalstic Himotoshi. Signed: Sukeyoshi; on flat polished cartouche; hidden in the texture of the nut; cf. MCI p. 830; Eguro Hida family. Condition B. Fruit flesh damaged.
