Japan. Edo period. Mid-19th century.

Sperm whale tooth; vividly carved with beautiful golden-yellow patina. Sitting Kirin with turned head looking up. Scaled body; darkly accentuated; likewise the mane; long beard; and the high curved curls of the tail. H.4.1cm. Condition A/B. Minimal loss on horn and ear.
