NETSUKE: SENNIN KOK?
Japan. Edo period. Mid-19th century.
Hippopotamus tooth; delicately carved; engraved; and darkly accentuated with beautifully glazed patina. The bearded Sennin; of Chinese origin; as an old smiling man sitting in a pot decorated with a dragon coming from the inside; the gourd; in which Kok?s remains were found; hanging from his belt. H.3.5cm. Signed: Shugyoku on rectangular reserve; cf. MCI p. 769; without information; likewise LA. Condition A.
