NETSUKE: ONI IN CAVE.
Japan. Edo period.
Boxwood. Rock cave next to a large pine in which Oni is hiding - only his upper body and the two-claw hands are visible - searched for by a determined looking Sh鬹i; who is approaching brandishing a sword in his right hand. As customary for this artist; very delicately carved and engraved with dark accentuations. It is remarkable that as Tomokazu is known mainly for his animal Netsuke - MCA; however; mentions two Oni see p. 897- 904; one being this one. H.3.9cm. Signed: Tomokazu on oval reserve; cf. MCI p. 897- 904. Condition A.
