A RARE CLOISONN?YONGZHONG BELL.
China. 18th/19th c.
Bronze with cloisonn?and gilding. Cast in imitation of traditional bronze bells of the late Spring and Autumn period (early 5th century BC); of lenticular form. Decorated with archaistic motifs including large taotie masks at the bottom above the arched rim; the trapezoidal panel with 36 bosses arranged in rows of three alternating with bands of angular scrolls and dragons. The flat top with further taotie masks repeated at the central bulb of the columner shank and flanked by a pair of gilt-bronze phoenix shaped flanges. Height 40cm; width 18cm.
