Handwritten note below the image in French by Eug鑞e Battaille (1817-1882).
Being a painter of smaller romantic genre scenes himself; Battille worked as a conservator at Versailles since 1852. In his note on the sheet at hand he confirms having found the study after the siege of Paris 1870/71 in his office in Versailles. During the siege; Versailles was the headquarters of the III Army. The Prussian painters Anton von Werner and Georg Bleibtreu; who documented the battles in painting; used Battaille's later office as their studio during these months.Art trade; Van Ham.
