PADMASAMBHAVA.
Bhutan. 18th c.

Copperbronze with engraved details. The Buddhist Master as Guru Rinpoche sitting in padmasana on a lotus throne. The design of the lotus leaves is characteristic for Bhutan. In his right he holds the vajra; in his left a kapala bowl; at this left shoulder the khatvanga staff is leaning.

Padmasambhava is connected to Bhutan through his intervention when the deity Shelging Karpo was threatening king Sendharkha. The Guru was riding on a tiger to the small kingdom and is revered till today at the place of his three month mediation before his magical fight with Shelging Karpo. Here was build high in the mountains the tiger nest temple (Kuje Lhakang). Traveling the Guru was spreading the Buddhism in the country. Weight 928g; height 19cm; width 12;6cm.
