Spain; Andalusia; city of Seville; cathedral of Saint Mary of the See (Seville Cathedral): Giralda (bell tower of the cathedral) with female bronze statue "El Girardillo" on top and part of the cathedral; In 1196; the 82 m high minaret of the Great Mosque of Almohad Seville was built. After the Reconquista; the tower became the bell tower of the new Gothic style cathedral of Seville. In 1568; architect Hern醤 Ruiz extended the tower to a height of now 104;5 m. It is crowned by a 3;5 m high female bronze figure; called "El Girardillo". As it is a weather flag; it is turning around (Spanish "girar"); giving also the name to the tower: Giralda. This figure was built 1566 - 1568 by Bartolom?Morel according to a model of Juan Bautista V醶quez. It symbolizes the triumph of Christian believe. The cathedral was built on the remains of the Great Mosque; built 1172 - 1248; durign the years 1401 - 1506 and 1511 - 1519.
