Italy; Tuscany; Lucca: detail (Mediterranean Sea) of world map (Italian mappamondo); replica; realized by Fra Mauro (1385 - 1459); in lobby of Hotel Ilaria. Fra Mauro; a Camaldulese monk and cartographer; realized this circular "Mappamondo" (world map) from 1457 to 1459 in Venice in the monastery San Michele (St. Michael) for the King of Portugal; Alfons V. The map is still in the tradition of Ptolemy (around 150 AD); but sets new levels. In are the new portuguese sea expeditions along the shores of Africa. Very precisely are as well East Asia and China. Most probably; Fra Mauro got this information via the legacy of Marco Polo or via Niccolo di Conti. The map was an early top eample of new Renaissance sciences.
